Shaili Singh sets the tone for U20 Worlds

PATIALA – 26 June 2021:Shaili Singh from Uttar Pradesh vows to keep the tradition of Indian junior athletes and set her eyes firmly on the podium for this year’s World U20 athletics championships scheduled in August at Nairobi. It was a pulsating effort with which she won the senior title in the ongoing 60th National Inter-State Athletics championships here on Saturday evening. Shaili was on command right from the very first leap and stamped her authority with BIG 6.48m in the final round. Tamil Nadu’s A Sherin, four years older to Shaili, was trying to give some fight to the 17-year-old UP girl. But Shaili responded it with three brilliant jumps that measured more than what Sherin achieved (6.26) for the silver. Shaili’s series ran as 619, 638, 633, 620, 625 and 648. Trained under the watchful eyes of Bobby George in Anju George Athletics Academy at Bengaluru, she is expected to reach her best in the Kenyan capital. India used to win GOLD medals in the U20 Worlds. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra (2016) and quarter-miler Hima Das (2018) won their respective events in the past. It is now the time for young Shaili Singh to carry on the responsibility on her shoulders. She is currently ranked a joint 7th in the World Athletics U20 Top Lists for the season.
