Major Reforms Announced at Athletics Federation of India AGM in Kohima

Kohima, April 18, 2026: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) concluded its two-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on April 14–15 in Kohima, Nagaland, with a series of significant decisions aimed at strengthening athletics governance and performance across the country.
The meeting, attended by representatives from affiliated state units, appreciated the arrangements made by the Nagaland government and the local athletics association. Several key resolutions were adopted to improve transparency, athlete performance, and administrative efficiency.
Among the major highlights, the federation formally ratified the 2026 competition calendar along with qualification standards for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The House also approved all national records set in 2025 and adopted audited financial statements for 2024–25.
Addressing the growing concern over doping violations, AFI emphasized stricter measures and urged state associations to take proactive steps. Lists of sanctioned athletes by global and national anti-doping agencies were also ratified.
In a move towards digital modernization, it was made mandatory for all state units to implement an online entry system for competitions. Non-compliance may lead to non-recognition of results and disciplinary action.
A notable decision includes the introduction of SRY gene testing for female athletes participating in AFI and world-ranking events. Additionally, a broader DNA testing initiative has been approved for research purposes, with strict confidentiality assured.
The federation also expressed concern over declining athletic performance in traditionally strong states such as Kerala and West Bengal. A detailed study will be conducted to identify causes and recommend improvements.
Administrative reforms included mandatory registration of all coaches and technical officials, accreditation of training centers, and standardization of officials’ uniforms to reduce costs. The AGM also approved increased entry fees for senior athletes in national series events, while district-level participation remains free.
On the governance front, the federation suspended the athletics associations of Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh due to non-compliance, while Manipur and Tripura were downgraded to associate members. Committees will be formed to oversee restructuring and elections in these states.
Looking ahead, AFI announced plans to host its Award Function on June 20, 2026, in Delhi and expressed optimism about India hosting the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar in 2028.
The AGM concluded with the adoption of the “Kohima Declaration,” reaffirming AFI’s commitment to athlete development, national integration through sports, and a strategic focus on promoting athletics in the North Eastern region.
Further detailed minutes of the meeting are expected to be released soon.
